This is a red Premier Cru from one of Meursault's top houses, a family better known for white wine, and it comes from a parcel that is only just getting started. Michel Bouzereau et Fils is the pick of the five domaines that carry the Bouzereau name. The family has made wine in Meursault for seven generations, and Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau has run the domaine since 1999, taking over from his father Michel. Their half-hectare of Les Vignes Franches sits on very red clay, and the vines only went in in 2017. That makes this young-vine Premier Cru, and a chance to follow a new site from its early vintages. The domaine has farmed organically since 2005 and has moved toward biodynamics without bothering to get certified. The grapes are destemmed and fermented with native yeasts, then the wine is aged in oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered, with the timing set by the lunar calendar. The domaine's own advice is to drink it between two and ten years of age, served at 16–17°C, a little cooler than room temperature.

"The 2024 Beaune Les Vignes Franches 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with kirsch, crushed strawberry and orange blossom scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with noticeable acidity, grainy in texture yet it needs more flesh to round out the finish. Drink over five or six years." —Neal Martin

More about Michel Bouzereau

Seven generations of Meursault winemaking converge in Michel Bouzereau's estate. He was president of the Burgundy Growers Union and a fierce traditionalist. His son Jean-Baptiste now steers the ship from their new winery (built 2009), commanding some of the Côte de Beaune's top parcels. This family's credentials aren't just credentials—they're a philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels, duck breast with a cherry sauce, coq au vin, mushroom and thyme tart, jambon persillé, or a wedge of Époisses

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Beaune Premier Cru profile: red cherry, raspberry and a touch of earthy spice, with gentle oak framing the fruit. Destemmed and from young vines on red clay, it typically leans toward supple, medium-bodied Pinot Noir with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a dry, savoury finish.
