This is Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru from one of Meursault's most quietly serious families, made from less than half a hectare of vines, the oldest of them planted in 1956. The domaine's 0.43 hectares of Les Champs Gains went in over three plantings, in 1956, 1976 and 1999, so each bottle draws on vines from three different eras. The last planting came the same year Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau took over from his father Michel, which suits a family that has made wine in Meursault for seven generations. The soil is clay and limestone, very stony and well drained. Jean-Baptiste has farmed organically since 2005 and has moved toward biodynamics without bothering to get certified. In the cellar he keeps his hands off: the juice goes into barrel with its fine lees and no sulfur, ferments on native yeasts, and usually spends about a year in barrel (25% new) and then three months in vat before it's bottled unfined and unfiltered. Five domaines carry the Bouzereau name, and this is the one we'd point you to. The domaine suggests serving it at 12–14°C and drinking it within 12 years.

"A slightly ripe though still agreeably cool and fresh nose features notes of faintly exotic aromas of white peach, spiced tea, citrus confit and plenty of floral elements. The super-sleek, refined and punchy, if not especially dense, flavors exude a more subtle bead of minerality on the very dry, powerful and lightly austere finale that is both longer and a bit more complex. Excellent potential." —Allen Meadows

"The 2024 Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs Gains 1er Cru has an impressive, reassuringly complex bouquet with crushed stone and flinty aromas underlying the malic fruit. The palate is bright and tensile, more saline than the Meursault Premier Crus with a vivid marine-influenced/oyster shell finish. Not to be ignored!" —Neal Martin

More about Michel Bouzereau

Seven generations of Meursault winemaking converge in Michel Bouzereau's estate. He was president of the Burgundy Growers Union and a fierce traditionalist. His son Jean-Baptiste now steers the ship from their new winery (built 2009), commanding some of the Côte de Beaune's top parcels. This family's credentials aren't just credentials—they're a philosophy.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Butter-poached lobster, seared scallops with beurre blanc, turbot or halibut with brown butter and capers, roast chicken with morels and cream, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru profile: lemon, white peach and green apple with hazelnut and a stony, chalky minerality. Around a year in barrel (a quarter new) and long lees ageing typically add a creamy texture and a gentle toasty note without heaviness. Bright acidity carries a long, dry, saline finish.
