A 1999 village Chambolle-Musigny whose heart sits right next door to Musigny, now with more than two decades behind it. Michel Gros builds this cuvée around Les Argillières, a parcel that continues the Musigny vines to the north at the mouth of the Chambolle combe. The name hints at the soil (argile is French for clay), and Gros says it gives a village wine with unusual strength and density, closer to a Premier Cru than to a typical Chambolle village. Small plots in Nazoires, Maladières and Mombies make up the rest. All of them sit on the stony alluvial cone of the combe, where the subsoil drains perfectly. Chambolle was still fairly new ground for Gros when this wine was made: he bought several plots there in 1993 and added more in 1996. He comes from a Vosne-Romanée family, settled there since 1830, whose house hid the Father Superior of the Abbey of Cîteaux during the 1789 revolution, and his village wines are a modest, honest way into a serious Côte de Nuits address after real time in bottle.

More about Michel Gros

Six generations of Vosne-Romanée skill distilled into entry-level magic. Michel Gros' village wines deliver the freshness and minerality that make you fall in love with Burgundy before spending serious money. The domaine has held the monopoly on Clos des Réas since 1860—one of Burgundy's great-estate benchmarks—but it's the approachable bottlings that let everyone in on the secret: Gros knows how to make Pinot sing.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, coq au vin, wild mushroom risotto, roast quail, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Chambolle-Musigny profile: red cherry, raspberry and violet, with the clay of Les Argillières typically lending more depth and density than a standard village wine. With bottle age, Chambolle usually turns savoury, showing forest floor, dried flowers and mushroom as its fine tannins soften to silk, while fresh acidity carries a long, dry finish.
