A nearly extinct taste of Alto Piemonte: Bramaterra from Tenuta Monolo, a producer that no longer exists, made from organically farmed volcanic soils. Bramaterra is one of the obscure jewels of northern Piedmont, a Nebbiolo-based DOC blended with local grapes Croatina, Vespolina, and Uva Rara, grown on iron-rich volcanic earth that gives the wines a distinctive savory, mineral edge. Umberto Gilodi was central to creating the Bramaterra DOC, and these Riservas were among the only organically produced examples of their era. This 1996 is a deeply mature back-vintage from a private collection, offering a window into a vanished corner of Italian wine. Decant and drink soon.
