San Giorgio Alto represents the elevation and sophistication Monte Dall'Ora can achieve in Valpolicella's finest sites. This cuvée comes from 500 meters elevation on limestone-dominated soils with perfect ventilation, creating significant day-night temperature differences that preserve freshness and complexity. The Valpolicella Classico Superiore designation (60% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella) carries additional ripeness and aging requirements. The 2020 shows "taut, cool, structured character with great precision and elegance"—a medium-bodied palate of fresh cherry and spice notes showcasing the whole spectrum of red fruit, spice, and fine herbs. The "whole lot of structure" indicates aging potential rarely found in Valpolicella—a wine that proves elevation and terroir matter in this storied appellation.

"The 2020 Valpolicella Classico Superiore San Giorgio Alto is defined by dark depths of crushed blackberry, sage, menthol, and stone dust. It's soothingly round with a tactile mineral crunch to balance, as tart wildberry fruits add cheek-pinching tension toward the close. This leaves a salty and citrus tinge and fine tannins that frame the experience well through the finish. Monte Dall’Ora has taken Valpolicella to another level." —Eric Guido

More about Monte Dall'Ora

Valpolicella's biodynamic rebel. Carlo and Alessandra chose the region's traditional varieties—Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, ancient Oseleta—and made them sing without the oak-heavy excess that became fashionable. Their wines are unfiltered, unfined, alive with integrity. They farm biodynamically on a unique limestone ridge and prove that respect for region can yield wines of real personality.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

60% Corvina/20% Corvinone/20% Rondinella. The Venturini family bought 1.5 hectares of vines in San Giorgio, about 8 kilometers from their estate vineyard, in 2015. They farm these vines biodynamically, like all of their others, but there are key differences in the site itself. It is a steeper, southwest-facing vineyard at the much higher altitude of 500 meters, compared to 150 meters at home. It is further west, the closest hill to nearby Lake Garda, a tempering factor for the microclimate in this isolated, forest-encircled, windy, cool plot. The 25-40-year-old vines are a bit younger compared than the estate vines. The limestone soils are similarly sandy and stony.
