Twenty-six years in, fully arrived. Le Pergole Torte is the iconic Tuscan flagship — the wine Sergio Manetti made in 1977 to defy Chianti law by bottling 100% Sangiovese as a Vino da Tavola, now bottled as Toscana IGT and continued by his son Martino in Radda in Chianti. The 1999 is a classical, structured Sangiovese vintage from old plantings (1968 onward), aged a year in Allier barrique and a year in large Slavonian oak — the slow, traditional Montevertine recipe. Now in full maturity, expect red fruits, dried cherry, anise, leather, road tar and forest floor, with the medium body and bright, savory acidity that Sangiovese delivers only when grown like this and given time. One of Italy's great library bottles.

"The 1999 Le Pergole Torte is powerful, structured and intense, with a big backbone of tannin and tremendous energy. This is one of the more delineated, sinewy vintages of Pergole Torte. In some ways, the 1999 reminds me of the 1988 because of its classicism, but it also has a sense of mid-palate sweetness that is evident. In a bit of an awkward stage, the 1999 is neither young nor old. Clearly, it is closer to the mature end of the spectrum, but I would hold off for a few years in the hope the tannins will soften a touch. Today, the 1999 is awkward, but the pedigree is evident. Cherry pit, smoke, tobacco and cedar resonate on the incisive finish. With time in the glass, the wine gets better and better." —Antonio Galloni

"Our bottle of the 1999 Le Pergole Torte was slightly off, and I put a question mark next to my score to reflect that fact. The bouquet is less precise and less focused overall. This is a relatively full-bodied expression of Sangiovese with aromas of dried rose petal and dark fruit followed by underbrush and wild porcino mushroom. The wine offers a solid and firm tannic backbone." —Monica Larner

"Intense aromas of plums, berries and fresh cedar. Full-bodied, with ripe and soft fruit, velvety tannins and a long, succulent finish. A decadent yet balanced red."

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

A wine for a Tuscan special occasion: bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragu over pici, peposo all'imprunetana, or roast lamb with rosemary. Pour gently into a carafe with sediment in mind; aged pecorino to close.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, fully mature, classical Sangiovese. Dried red cherry, anise, leather, road tar, forest floor and a quiet balsamic edge. Tannins long since resolved; acidity bright, savory and persistent. Drinking at its peak now.
