Mouzon-Leroux, Champagne l'Angelique Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature Grand Cru, 2018

Sebastien Mouzon is the 9th generation to farm his family's land in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, and he works it biodynamically (Demeter certified), making low-intervention Champagnes of striking tension and transparency. L'Angelique is his vintage Blanc de Blancs, all Chardonnay from Verzy's chalk-rich soils, fermented naturally, aged in used oak with years on the lees, and finished bone-dry as Brut Nature with no dosage. The 2018 is a soulful, mineral, chalky grower Champagne, not a fruit-forward crowd-pleaser but a thoughtful one that rewards attention. Drink now or cellar.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters and shellfish, sushi, roast chicken, soft cheeses, or fried seafood.

Tasting Profile

Bone-dry, mineral grower Champagne. Chalky and taut with stone fruit, citrus and white-flower notes, racy acidity and a long, saline finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
