If Nigl's everyday Grüner is the one you guzzle on hot days, this is the one to put away: the Herzstück, or "heart piece," of the Kirchenberg, a 1ÖTW first-growth site in Austria's Kremstal. The Kirchenberg is four small terraces right next to the winery in Senftenberg, below the ruins of a castle built in 1197. Its soil runs somewhat deeper over mica schist than Nigl's other top site, Pellingen. The Nigls say that always gives a substantial, extract-rich Grüner that shows its full potential only after a few years in bottle. The 2024 is a powerful one at 14% alcohol, juicy rather than heavy. That's quite a wine from a first-generation grower who started in 1985 by convincing his family to stop selling their grapes to the local co-op and bottle them themselves. It's great now with a serious dinner, and even better if you can wait.

"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Privat Ried Kirchenberg Herzstück is picked from five south-east-facing terraces of mica schist just below the church and next to the winery. It was harvested superbly ripe but without any botrytis in late November, then fermented and aged in used large acacia barrel. The nose is rich with savor and ripeness; crushed yarrow and salty yeast are as present as maple syrup and a touch of licorice. Despite the undoubted ripeness and richness, definition and precision prevail. A savory heart propels celery salt, while concentration almost adds the texture of ripe plum skin with a slight but supple, mouthwatering, gentle bitterness. This wine has statuesque structure, flow and much energy that will take years to unfold. Martin Nigl says that he could not achieve this on loess; this level of ripeness and precision is only possible on schist." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"Buttered macadamias, yellow apple and quince with an underscore of cooked turnip typicity. Richly textured and juicy with vanilla length."

More about Nigl

Great Grüner Veltliner on the slopes of the Kremstal. Martin Nigl has farmed these terraces sustainably for decades—no herbicides, no sulfites except minimal amounts at bottling—letting the grapes and their stony-loess soils speak. His Freiheit and Gärtling bottlings show ripeness and energy without flashiness. A Nigl is a daily drinker that keeps rewarding you.
