Nikolaihof stands as Austria's most revered biodynamic producer—practicing biodynamics since 1971, decades before the term gained international recognition. The Im Weingebirge vineyard captures the essence of Wachau terroir, with the Smaragd designation (highest dry level of Wachau classification) indicating a wine of serious structure and aging potential. The Grüner Veltliner from this 2019 vintage, at six years old, shows mature complexity—the primary fruit beginning to integrate with developing secondary notes. Biodynamic viticulture—guided by lunar cycles, no synthetic inputs—creates wines of exceptional purity. This is a wine for those seeking to understand Austrian Grüner Veltliner at its finest.

"The 2019 Grüner Veltliner Im Weingebirge Smaragd grew in loess above gneiss and was fermented and aged in wood, where it stayed for three years before bottling and release in spring 2024. Wax, yeast and a touch of honey suggest evolution on the nose. The waxiness, perfumed with orange peel, follows through onto the surprisingly light but concentrated body. Balm-like texture accentuates the waxiness and completely buffers the undeniable, vivid acidity. This is an unusual but beautifully textured wine with a noble, pleasant bitterness on the long finish." —Anne Krebiehl MW

"The 2019 Ried Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is deep, intense and aromatic on the nose that reveals flinty notes of crushed rocks (paragneiss) and ripe, yellow stone fruits. Round, smooth and refined on the palate, this is a full-bodied, elegant and savory, long and seriously structured wine from the six-hectare cru that is located within the Ried Alte Point in Mautern. The finish is savory and saline yet also quite powerful. I would recommend cellaring the wine for at least another five or seven years to integrate the tannins that still stand out in the finish. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Since last year when I last tasted this, it™s become only richer and more delicious. The gold hue and earthy, nutty lees notes show the maturity of the wine; but it feels clean and vibrant, swirling with notes of dried flowers, fresh acacia blossom, apricot jam and lovely Waldmeister (woodruff) spice. It™s plush and inviting right now, especially with a creamy wild-mushroom fricassee, and yet it™s also built to last for many more years in the cellar. Long finish."

More about Nikolaihof

Austria's oldest vineyard with almost two millennia of history. The Im Weingebirge site dates to the 5th century, when Roman soldiers occupied the Wachau. Nikolaihof has been Demeter-certified biodynamic since the 1970s—one of the first in Europe to embrace the practice. The wines are minerally, precise, and feel like touching something very old and very alive.
