Vidueño is the traditional term for a field blend in the Canary Islands, where indigenous varieties have grown interplanted for centuries. This white from Ocampo combines multiple native grapes—likely including Listán Blanco, Marmajuelo, and others—from ungrafted vines on Tenerife's volcanic soils. The result is a wine of striking originality: saline, textured, and impossible to compare to anything from the mainland. Jonatan García's minimal-intervention approach preserves the raw, elemental character of this Atlantic island terroir.

"The 2022 Vidueño is a white blend produced with Marmajuelo, Malvasía Aromática, Albillo Criollo and Listán Blanco from 25-year-old trellised vines. The grapes fermented in a 1,500-liter oak foudre, where the wine matured with lees for 10 months. It's clean and fruit-driven, moderately aromatic (from the Marmajuelo) with a moderate degree of alcohol (12.5%) and a saline twist in the finish. The profile is not unlike some Godello from Valdeorras." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about Ocampo

Ocampo is a young project on Tenerife's volcanic northeast, started by Jonatan García Lima after encouragement from the López Díaz family. 12 hectares of reddish, volcanic soil between 200 and 800 meters elevation, planted with indigenous grapes and worked using the traditional 'rastra' pruning method. The 2022 debut was impressive; 2023 even more so. Welcome to Tenerife's next-generation winemakers, thinking differently about terroir in the Atlantic wind.
