Paitin has been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1800s, and the Faset cru is one of their most prized sites—sun-exposed, calcareous, and known for producing some of the region’s most graceful, age-worthy Nebbiolo.

The 2020 vintage is beautifully poised: lifted aromatics of rose, red cherry, and anise give way to firm but polished tannins, savory undertones, and a finish that hums with spice and mineral tension. It’s textbook Barbaresco—elegant, transparent, and quietly deep.

Drink it young with a decant and some braised meats or truffle pasta, or let it evolve over the next decade. Either way, it’s a reminder that Barbaresco doesn’t need flash to impress—just place, patience, and producers like Paitin.

Robert Parker

94 points

"The Paitin 2020 Barbaresco Faset (with only 3,045 bottles made) shows noticeable power and concentration that reflects the sunny warmth and high temperatures of this vintage. Vineyards in Barbaresco fared well, offering darker wines for sure, but with intact perfumes that are not weighed down by over-ripeness. Ultimately, the vintage character comes off as more accessible, maybe a little softer and more fruit-forward. Black cherry segues to earth, rust and licorice." —Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

93 points

"A fruity version, boasting cherry, raspberry and strawberry flavors. Light on its feet, picking up accents of earth, mint and cola. Firms up on the finish, with powdery tannins."

More about Paitin

Freisa's forgotten strawberry charm revived. For the first time since the 1960s, Paitin is making wine from Freisa—Piedmont's spicy, high-tannin red that tastes of strawberry (its etymological namesake) and autumn spice. Their Langhe Freisa Bonina is generous, perfumed, and a perfect reminder that native grapes tell stories that imports can't.

Tasting Profile

Deep ruby with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, and mineral notes. Medium to full-bodied with firm, elegant tannins, flavors of dark fruit, herbs, and earth with a long finish.

A recent visit to the Paitin estate in Neive was full of delicious wines and fascinating history. The Pasquero-Elia family has been working these vineyards since 1796, and bottling the wines as Barbaresco for more than a century, even before their village officially joined Barbaresco. Three generations of the family are at work today in the vineyards and cellar, working organically and crafting Nebbiolo wines with equal power and grace.
