Pascal Aufranc works a small estate in the Beaujolais cru of Chenas, where his old vines grow on pure pink granite in the lieu-dit En-Remont, high on a steep hillside. His Chenas Vieilles Vignes comes from parcels of very old vines and is aged in barrel for several months, giving a Beaujolais with real depth and structure. This is the 2014, a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar that has had time to round out and develop. Granite-grown Gamay like this rewards a few years in the cellar, and this one is drinking in a lovely spot now, with darker fruit and a savory edge. A serious cru Beaujolais for those who want more than easy fruit.
