Antonio Galloni

"Very closed nose hints at citrus skin, nutmeg and flowers. Then almost shockingly fat and full on the palate but quite dry, conveying an impression of breadth without excess weight. The citrus, pear, apple and crushed stone flavors are extremely unevolved. This shares the spicy, ripe citrus quality of several of Javillier's other 2007s and may ultimately merit an even higher rating. Javillier considers this wine to be a long ager and thus he was willing to "bump it up" from 12.8% to 13.5% alcohol, while leaving the rest of his wines around 13%." —Stephen Tanzer

"Lemon, violet, and chalk dust on the nose of Javillier’s 2007 Corton-Charlemagne lead to a palate with refreshing fruit touched by chalk, honey, nut oils, and the complimentary astringency of lemon pip and peach kernel. This combines formidable sheer density with vivacity and lift, finishing with invigorating length. While nature did not increase the amount of Charmes produced this year, there are all of three and a half barriques (all used once previous) – the largest volume ever – of this beauty. I would anticipate it improving over a number of years and performing brilliantly for a decade." —David Schildknecht

More about Patrick Javillier

Patrick Javillier's father was a broker buying wine for a British client, not a full-time winemaker—he didn't have enough vines. Patrick studied oenology, took over in 1974 with three hectares, and built an 11-hectare estate across Côte de Beaune Chardonnay sites (Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne) plus Pinot Noir. His daughter Marion and son-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel carry it forward now. The wines are precise, age-worthy, and built on generations of learning what Burgundy asks for.
