The 2017 Pomarium represents a vintage shift: after five years of California drought, 2017 brought significant rain ending the water stress. The vintage began early but then accelerated with a Labor Day heat spike, followed by cooling mid-September. The result was an unusual harvest window—rapid, then slowed, then rapid again. Ninety percent of the Napa and Sonoma harvest came in before the October fires.

This 2017 Pomarium benefits from excellent color, extraction, and flavor. The vineyard's muscular character—that old-vine intensity and power—finds perfect expression in a vintage with excellent structural extraction. At nine years old, it shows darker fruit character and herbal complexity that emerges from Pomarium's old-vine Pinot Noir intensity. This is a wine with serious presence and aging potential. The structured, complex palate reflects the challenge and drama of the 2017 vintage—fires threatening the region, but harvest completed successfully before disaster. A wine of substance that demands food and rewards careful cellaring. The tannins remain firm but are beginning to resolve beautifully.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Pomarium is the most exotic, flamboyant wine in this range from Peay. Soaring aromatics and layers of bold, racy fruit rush out of the glass. Like the other 2017s, the Pomarium needs time to fully come together. Even so, it is impressive today. Crushed raspberry, pomegranate, mint and rose petal are all beautifully lifted in this sublime Pinot Noir. In this tasting, the Pomarium is marked by a very specific exotic quality." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

96 points

"Pale ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Pomarium has delicate scents of tangerine peel, rosewater, licorice, tea leaves and tree bark with bright, fresh red berry fruits at the core. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied and silky, slowly expanding to bright, bitters-laced fruits with bursts of juiciness, loads of nuance and a very long, ethereal finish. What a gorgeous expression!" —Erin Brooks

Tasting Profile

Dark red and black fruits (plum, blackberry) with herbal spice notes from the field blend. Full-bodied with structured tannins reflecting old-vine concentration and excellent vintage extraction. The 2017 shows remarkable balance despite its power—ripe but not jammy, structured but not hard.
