Pehu-Simonet, a grower-producer in Verzenay, specializes in Pinot Noir–driven Champagnes from Grand Cru sites in the Montagne de Reims. Face Nord Brut blends predominantly Pinot Noir with Chardonnay, fermented in stainless steel and aged on lees for complexity. Low dosage preserves purity and terroir expression.

Structured and precise, it reflects the power of northern-facing vineyards in a refined style. Excellent with charcuterie, seafood, or poultry.

Robert Parker

90 points

"Disgorged in November 2019, the latest release of Pehu-Simonet's NV Brut Grand Cru Face Nord is showing nicely, offering up aromas of white flowers and walnuts mingled with hints of orange oil and crisp yellow apple. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and incisive, with racy acids and chalky grip, it will unwind further with a little time on cork." —Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Packs a fragrant skein of violet, star anise and graphite that winds through macerated cherry and strawberry fruit, raw almond and crystallized honey. Finely meshed and satiny in texture, this is softly juicy and fresh throughout. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay."

More about

Pehu-Simonet is a Grand Cru specialist, only bottling from his top sites and sells the rest off. The north facing Verzenay Grand Cru has chalk minerals that stand the village apart, but he also has tiny holdings in Bouzy and Mesnil. Applying techniques he learned in Burgundy back in the 1980s, he makes rich, Pinot Noir based Champagnes that -- like all the best Grower Champagnes -- don't taste like any other.

Tasting Profile

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
