Up in the hills behind the Côte de Beaune, the village of Fussey sits high enough that Chardonnay keeps its nerve even in a warm year. This comes from a single half-acre of En Mainbey there — a south-facing but cool site on well-draining clay — farmed sustainably by a grower who sells the fruit to Seiichi Saito. Saito trained at Bize, Mugnier, Rousseau and Leflaive before founding Petit-Roy in 2017, and his whites all get the same quiet treatment: a slow 90-minute press, ambient-yeast fermentation, twelve months in used barrels and a few more in tank. There is no new oak anywhere, so the site does the talking. The 2023 Chardonnays came in harmonious and clearly defined, and this one is drinking well already.
