Widely considered the greatest producer of Saint-Joseph today, and the regular bottling has gone so cult it's genuinely hard to find. Pierre and Jean Gonon — the fourth generation, who took over from their father in 1988 — farm steep granite slopes in Mauves, the historic heart of the appellation and effectively a mirror image of the hill of Hermitage directly across the river, sharing the same granite bedrock. The vines are trained the old way, one stake per vine in the echalas method with the shoots left untrimmed, and the ten hectares are worked entirely by hand because the grade and the tight vine spacing make a machine impossible. They've used no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides since 2004, and were later certified. What you get for all that labor is Syrah of purity and finesse rather than brute power, plus an unusual freshness that comes from the eastern exposure and its shorter hours of sun.

"The 2021 Saint-Joseph used roughly 50% whole-clusters during fermentation. In comparison, 2022 saw 85% inclusion, while in 2017, no destemming was applied. Coming in at 12.5% alcohol, the deep purple-hued 2021 unfurls with pretty red fruits paired with leafy undertones and cedar. Orange blossom and rose petal add welcome floral lift. Light to medium in body, this is a delicate Gonon, neatly framed by velvety tannins and bright acidity. It should drink well right out of the gate. Tasted twice with consistent notes." —Nicolas Greinacher

"The 2021 Saint-Joseph from the Gonon Brothers is simply gorgeous within the context of the vintage. Evoking aromas of fresh licorice, dark cherries, smoke and dark berries, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and slightly austere with structured yet delicate tannins and a long, ethereal and mineral finish. The wine’s brooding and gently introverted character can be attributed to the hailstorm that struck on the night of September 29, which interrupted the harvest. This Saint-Joseph will benefit from some time to mellow and fully express its potential." —Yohan Castaing

"There’s an appealing touch of oregano to the blackberry fruit. It’s medium-bodied, with good acidity, but not as concentrated as the past few vintages. The tannins are however ripe and fine. Quite a delicate vintage, but good balance and freshness. Harvest started on 24 September, and yields were low this year at 27hl/ha."

More about Pierre Gonon

Gonon produces St. Joseph in the very heart of the AOC. The “original” AOC, when first set up, consisted only of a handful of villages at its (present) southern end, alongside Cornas, to its south. In later years, flatter lands to the north were added, and in fact most of the St. Joseph produced today is grown in those lesser sites. And it is not as good.

Gonon’s particular village is Mauves, one of the star villages with it steep, solid granite vineyard sites. Mauves is not a well-known name today, as the branding provided by the AOC has taken over, but this was historically recognized as one of France’s great sources of wine, earning references like Victor Hugo’s in Les Miserables.

Gonon, in short, possesses terroir that is equal to the greatest sites of Hermitage or Cote Rotie. They (the original Pierre Gonon left his winery to his two sons) farm the vines exclusively by hand (machines would never work on those steep slopes) and are certified organic. They work exclusively in a traditional manner, but with a focus on precision and purity. Their cellarwork would not look unfamiliar to anyone who has visited Jean-Louis Chave, for instance.

Gonon isn't just a wine to compare to Chave and the other GOATs. Gonon is one of the GOATs. But ultimately there's nothing we can say here that will fully communicate the whys or hows of it. When a producer is truly great, there's only so much you can say.

What you can do instead is drink the wines and recognize the magic. Ask a winemaker, and they will tell you that it isn’t really magic, of course, but just the product of someone working with top notch material who gets all the tiny little details right; deep local knowledge and experience guiding the kind of intuitive decision-making that you need to apply all the time when you are growing vines and making wines.

Gonon just gets it right.
