Pierre Moncuit, Champagne Coulmet Brut Blanc de Blancs [2020], NV

This is the friendly, everyday side of a great Le Mesnil grower: Pierre Moncuit's only cuvée from the family's vines in Sézanne, south-southwest of their Grand Cru home. If the Mesnil Delos is the aristocrat of the range, Coulmet is the democrat. It's round, soft and easy, and the family pitches it for the aperitif or to carry on through dinner. The rules haven't been relaxed, though. The family uses no reserve wines, so the NV label hides a single harvest (2020 in this case), and since they never blend villages, this is pure Sézanne Chardonnay. It ferments in stainless steel with full malolactic (there isn't a barrel in the winery) and is finished Brut. Hugues de Coulmet is the name of the parcel itself. It's serious grower Blanc de Blancs that you don't have to save for a special occasion.

More about Pierre Moncuit

The Moncuit family planted vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the great Chardonnay villages of the Côte des Blancs, back in 1889, and Pierre Moncuit started making his own wine in 1928. His daughter Nicole ran the cellar from 1977, and her daughter Valérie took the reins in 2007. Home turf is all Chardonnay on chalk. The flagship Delos Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru comes as Brut and Extra Brut, while the old-vine Cuvée Nicole is made only in exceptional vintages.

Tasting Profile

Expect a round, soft Blanc de Blancs with white-flower aromas (think lily and jasmine), ripe peach and pear, and a fine, gentle mousse. Full malolactic and no oak typically give a creamy, unadorned texture, with fresh acidity that's softer than the steely Côte des Blancs norm. The finish is dry, clean and easy-going.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
