Chianti Classico’s hallmark of elegance and balance comes through beautifully in this 2021 N’Uovo from Poggerino. Ripe cherries and raspberries lead the way, while subtle floral notes of violet and a touch of earthy spice round out the wine’s complex profile.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a lively acidity that lifts the fruit, while soft tannins provide structure without overpowering the freshness. The earthy nuances add depth, and the finish lingers with a clean, satisfying balance of fruit and minerality.

This wine is an excellent match for roasted meats, pasta with hearty tomato-based sauces, or a cheese platter. While it’s approachable now, the 2021 vintage has the potential to evolve and become even more refined with some time in the bottle.

More about Poggerino

Tuscany is the spiritual home of Sangiovese, and Radda, Chianti Classico's highest elevation village, produces some of the finest expressions of this noble grape.

Radda is home to an incredible set of growers, like Montevertine, Le Boncie, Istine and Monteraponi. These estates make extremely fine, beautifully nuanced expressions of Sangiovese and have garnered loads of international attention. But there is an under-the-radar grower in Radda who is producing some of the very best wines in all of Tuscany, and at attractive prices too. That grower is Poggerino.

Piero Lanza took over this family-owned estate in 1980 and since 2010, he has been organically farming their 11 hectares of ideally situated Sangiovese vineyards. His vines reach over 600 meters of elevation and are loaded with the famous, well draining, Galestro clay soils.

With global warming in full effect, these high altitude terroirs experience a more pronounced diurnal temperature shift that extends the growing season and allows the grapes to achieve a more harmonious balance of phenolic and sugar ripeness. This is key for achieving Piero’s bright, lifted, supremely elegant style.

Piero is an innovator in the cellar. In addition to his stunningly delicious, traditionally styled Chianti Classico Normale and Riserva bottlings, he produces a wine called N’Uovo which is a selection of top parcels vinified and aged in concrete eggs (Uovo in Italian). Although these vessels have become popular with some truly great growers, they are still quite rare in Tuscany. The eggs help reveal a wine of maximum freshness and energy bursting with crunchy, shockingly pure, high-toned fruit and a weightless texture. It’s a deliciously unique expression of Radda’s terroir, and one that you don't want to miss. In a word, these wines are brilliant.
