Prager's Ried Klaus is a tiny, brutally steep terraced site on the eastern edge of Weissenkirchen, with gradients reaching 77 percent and dark gneiss-and-amphibolite soils that make a tightly wound, powerful wine. Smaragd is the Wachau's ripest dry category, and these wines are built to age for decades. At over two decades old, this 2001 is a rare chance to taste mature Austrian Riesling, where the youthful fruit has given way to honeyed, savory complexity. Drink soon while it holds its grace.
