Asili is the perfumed, lacy side of Barbaresco — the cru most often invoked when people compare these wines to Burgundy. Produttori del Barbaresco, the cooperative that has set the village's quality benchmark since 1958, releases its nine single-cru Barbarescos only as Riservas in the best vintages, after roughly six years of cellar aging. The 2008 was a classical, balanced Piedmont vintage, and Asili's south-facing slope below the village translates that into a wine of finesse rather than power: rose petal, sweet red cherry, sandalwood. Seventeen years on, the tannins have melted into silk and the aromatics have entered their meditative second act. The cooperative model has rarely produced anything this elegant.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Good bright, dark red. Enticing, Burgundian aromas of cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, spices and truffle, accented by high notes of rose petal and orange peel. Rich, round and fat with concentrated fruit, but given a light touch by harmonious acidity. A real fruit bomb, with complicating nuances of spices and herbs. The rising finish features very fine-grained tannins that arrive late and explosive juicy freshness. Has the firm spine and reserve to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. A great vintage for this cru." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Asili's perfume rewards lighter touches: tajarin with butter and white truffle, veal tonnato, roasted pheasant, mushroom risotto, aged Robiola or Castelmagno. Avoid anything too forceful or heavily spiced — Asili wants conversation, not competition.

Tasting Profile

Mature, elegant Nebbiolo. Rose petal, sandalwood, dried strawberry, orange peel, sweet pipe tobacco, a whisper of truffle. Silken texture, fine resolved tannin, the perfumed, lifted finish that defines Asili.
