If Asili is the lace, Rabajà is the velvet. The cru sits on a slightly different exposure across the Barbaresco hill, and the wines that come from it run deeper and broader — more shoulders, more grip, a darker register of fruit and spice. Produttori del Barbaresco bottles Rabajà only in Riserva years, holding the wine back roughly six years before release. The 2009 vintage was warm and ripe, which suits this cru's natural muscle: black cherry, dark earth, licorice, savory dried herb. After sixteen years the tannins have settled, but there's still meaningful structure here, and a long horizon ahead. The Produttori's traditional élevage in large Slavonian oak preserves every nuance of the site.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Good full, dark red. Complex, perfumed aromas and flavors of black cherry, tobacco, licorice and wild herbs. Ripe, opulent and silky, with a lovely thickness of texture leavened by harmonious acidity. Finishes with firm, suave tannins and excellent length." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2009 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is an impeccable wine that shows the strength, generosity and elegance that this important vineyard site is known for. Most significant is the wine's structure that is endearing and firm but also supple. It shows power and a silken touch. Dark fruit, spice, licorice and herb make for a perfect fusion of aromas. The mouthfeel shows balanced power and vigor. This wine will improve with time. It is at the mere beginning of a long evolution." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

91 points

"An elegant style, with cherry, strawberry, white pepper and earth flavors. This is supported by a swath of dense tannins and leaves a drying impression."

Kerin O'Keefe

94 points

"Aromas of underbrush, leather, crushed blue flower, incense and balsamic notes lead the nose on this gorgeous wine. The delicious palate delivers succulent black cherry layered with white pepper and clove alongside bracing tannins." —Kerin O'Keefe

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Rabajà has the spine for serious meat: brasato al Barolo, ossobuco alla Milanese, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, aged Toma, hard mountain cheeses with honey. Bring out the porcini and the slow-roasted beef.

Tasting Profile

Mature traditional Nebbiolo with real structure. Black cherry, licorice, sweet tobacco, dried herb, dark earth, hints of leather. Broader and darker than Asili, fine grippy tannins, a long savory length.
