The most perfumed of the nine — Asili, the cru that often gets called Barbaresco's most feminine, in classical-vintage form. Produttori del Barbaresco is the celebrated cooperative founded in 1958 by small Barbaresco growers; in strong years they bottle nine single-cru Riservas after roughly five years of aging (three years in large Slavonian botti plus six to twelve months in bottle). If Montestefano is the muscle and Rabajà the spine, Asili is the perfume — the most aromatic, elegant, lifted of the nine, all rose petal, red cherry, and silky fragrance. The 2008 vintage in Piedmont was classical and structured, giving Asili a bit more frame than it sometimes has, and seventeen years on this is just hitting its window: tannins polishing out, that legendary aromatic lift emerging in full bloom, with another decade of upside ahead.

Antonio Galloni

94 points

"Good bright, dark red. Enticing, Burgundian aromas of cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, spices and truffle, accented by high notes of rose petal and orange peel. Rich, round and fat with concentrated fruit, but given a light touch by harmonious acidity. A real fruit bomb, with complicating nuances of spices and herbs. The rising finish features very fine-grained tannins that arrive late and explosive juicy freshness. Has the firm spine and reserve to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle. A great vintage for this cru." —Stephen Tanzer
