Donovan Rall is one of the original Swartland garagistes and a defining voice of South Africa's New Wave, and Ava, named for his daughter, is among his most personal bottlings. It's a single-site Chenin Blanc drawn from two parcels of old vines on schist, naturally fermented and aged ten or so months in older 400-liter French oak. The 2024 sees a tighter, more focused harvest window than recent vintages, and the wine shows it: spring blossom, white peach, almond nougat, lanolin, and a quiet, controlled stroke of oak spice across a waxy, schist-fed palate. This is racy, restrained, age-worthy Chenin, the kind that rewards air and patience but drinks beautifully tonight.

"The Rall 2024 Swartland Chenin Blanc Ava reflects a shift in harvest timing to achieve a tighter and more focused profile. Oxidation is remarkably stable in this vintage, giving the wine a restrained and controlled expression that will require time to evolve. Gorgeous yet currently reserved, it promises depth beneath its quiet exterior. The decomposed granite soils of Swartland often yield Chenin Blancs with both breadth and structure, yet in this case, the wine is deliberately held back, emphasizing tension over immediate generosity.
