Donovan Rall's maiden Grenache, and a window into where the Swartland is going next. Rall has spent a decade defining restrained, terroir-driven Cape wine, and his first release of varietal Grenache lands with the same quiet confidence as his Chenins: lifted, perfumed, low in alcohol for the variety, and built around acidity and minerality rather than heat or extraction. Native ferment, gentle handling, older wood, the same playbook. Expect bright red cherry, raspberry coulis, dried herbs, pink peppercorn, and a chalky, mineral spine that pulls the whole thing taut. Serve it with a slight chill if the night is warm; it can take it. A genuinely exciting first vintage from one of South Africa's most important winemakers.

"Donovan Rall took four attempts before releasing his debut 2024 Grenache Noir from large berry clone, aged in a 3,000-litre foudre. It has an open nose with red rather than black fruit, red brick and irony scents coming through with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with raspberry and pomegranate notes, finely sculpted tannins and a lively, characterful peppery finish that is just a pure joy. "A new wine, the Rall 2024 Swartland Grenache Noir is part of an ongoing exploration of tannin and site, sourced from granitic soils and planted to a clone that has larger berries. Vintner Donovan Rall says it's taken him a few years to get his head around this maiden vintage. The wine shows powdery and refined tannins, the result of careful study and thoughtful picking decisions, as ripeness levels are adjusted to find balance in younger vines. Tasting Profile

Translucent ruby. Red cherry, raspberry coulis, pomegranate, dried thyme, pink peppercorn, and crushed stone. Light-bodied and lifted; fine-grained tannins, juicy acidity, and a chalky, mineral finish.
