Limestone is rare in the Finger Lakes, and the Argetsinger Vineyard is one of the few sites that has it: a steep, rocky hillside of Howard gravel over limestone on the southeast side of Seneca Lake. This dry Riesling comes from just 4 acres of vines planted in the early 1980s. The site is so low-vigour that it rarely gives even two tons of fruit per acre, so the vines do the concentrating and nobody in the cellar has to. Morten Hallgren grew up working his family's vineyards in Provence and was chief winemaker at Dr. Konstantin Frank before he founded Ravines. He has bottled this vineyard on its own since 2002. Ravines built its name on dry Riesling, and its 2002 Dry Riesling took top honors at the World Riesling Cup. If you still think New York Riesling means sweet, start here. The house makes it to drink well young and also to age, so it's worth putting a second bottle away.

Robert Parker

92 points

"Pristine, racy aromas of lime sherbet and green apple mark the nose of the 2022 Dry Riesling Argetsinger Vineyard, another fine effort from Ravines and owner-winemaker Morten Hallgren. It's a streamlined, medium-bodied Riesling that's unadorned by excess sugar (like all the dry Rieslings at Ravines, it carries three to four grams per liter of residual sugar). The zesty finish lingers in an impressively clean, refreshing fashion." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Spectator

"Yuzu, quince, Meyer lemon and green almond notes give this range and distinction as the racy acidity courses along, carrying everything through the focused finish."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-seared lake trout with brown butter and lemon; raw oysters; pork schnitzel with a squeeze of lemon; Vietnamese summer rolls with nuoc cham; green papaya salad; fresh goat cheese with herbs.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Finger Lakes Riesling profile: lime, green apple and white peach, with the stony, mineral edge a limestone site tends to bring. Typically light- to medium-bodied, with racy, mouthwatering acidity and the extra concentration of low-yielding mature vines, finishing dry, crisp and long.
