The flagship blend, assembled from 20 different parcels across 15-16 named vineyard sites throughout Cote-Rotie, and now, from the great 2015 vintage, just easing into its drinking window. Ampodium (formerly called 'Classique') captures the full range of the appellation in one bottle: fruit from both Cote Brune and Cote Blonde, blended to show Cote-Rotie's complete personality. Rene Rostaing began in 1971; his son Pierre now manages over 20 acres of the appellation's finest sites, inherited from legends Marius Gentaz and Albert Dervieux. 2015 was a rich, structured, undeniably serious year in the Northern Rhone, and this bottle still carries that density, so give it a good decant. The most accessible Rostaing, but don't mistake accessibility for simplicity.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Opaque ruby. Highly perfumed, displaying ripe dark berry, olive and violet scents energized by a peppery spice nuance. Fleshy and expansive on the palate, offering sweet blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors and allspice and camphor notes. Supple tannins sneak in late and fold smoothly into the lush dark fruit on the clinging finish." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"Bottled in July, the 2015 Cote Rotie Ampodium is fairly full-bodied and quite rich. The black olive and raspberry notes verge on being jammy but are balanced by peppery spice and firm, savory tannins. Give it 5 years in the cellar to settle down, and drink it over the next decade and a half or more. For an entry-level wine, it's remarkable." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Spectator

"A bright flash of white pepper gives way to bay leaf, crushed bitter plum and raspberry coulis flavors, with a sleek iron edge. Racy and youthfully taut, but shows ample stuffing for cellaring."

More about Rene Rostaing

René Rostaing was a notary who fell in love with Côte-Rôtie in the 1970s when vineyard prices were laughably cheap. He bought parcels in the two best lieux-dits—Côte Blonde and La Landonne—and made classical Syrah the way his uncle Marius Gentaz had taught him. No high-tech gimmicks, traditional aging, very little new oak. His son Pierre now runs the 20-acre estate, producing some of the most mineral, age-worthy Côte-Rôties out there. This is what conservative winemaking looks like when you start with premium fruit.
