Rhys made its name chasing Burgundian elegance through mountain farming, but the Horseshoe Syrah shows the estate's Northern Rhone side, and it is a sleeper. From the high, protected Horseshoe vineyard near the spine of the Santa Cruz Mountains, this is a cool-climate Syrah grown on the same stony, low-yield terroir as the estate Pinots, built for savory aromatics and serious aging rather than power. This 2014 has time on it but is the kind of bottle that rewards nearly a decade in the cellar and then some. Decant it. A connoisseur's California Syrah for Northern Rhone lovers.

Kevin Harvey, a software entrepreneur with a Burgundy obsession, started Rhys in 2004 to prove California could make world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from mountain vineyards. Seven estate vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Anderson Valley, all gravity-fed, foot-trodden, wild fermented by winemaker Jeff Brinkman. These are soil-driven wines—mineral, complex, serious. The kind of wines that make you forget you're drinking California.
