A unicorn. Roagna's Crichet Pajè is one of Barbaresco's most legendary single-parcel bottlings — a tiny half-hectare selection of the oldest vines within the Pajè cru, on a micro-particle uniquely rich in white calcareous marl, producing only 2,000–3,000 bottles in any given vintage. 1978 was Alfredo Roagna's first commercial release of this wine, making 1979 one of the earliest Crichet Pajè bottlings ever to leave the cellar. The Roagnas (now led by Alfredo's son Luca) are among Piedmont's most uncompromising traditionalists — endless macerations, large neutral botti, multi-decade aging arcs. The 1979 vintage in Piedmont was a good classical year. At 46 years old, this is fully mature, fragile, and museum-piece territory — a chance to taste the foundational era of one of Barbaresco's cult cuvées.

More about Roagna

Luca Roagna is the fifth generation in a family that's been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1850s. His Dolcetto comes from vines over 45 years old, fermented with real patience and aged in neutral oak. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why everyone doesn't make Dolcetto this seriously.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Simple, restrained preparations — roast capon, tajarin in brodo, aged Castelmagno, white truffle risotto, lightly seasoned game bird, anything that steps aside for the wine.

Tasting Profile

Dried rose, sandalwood, leather, dried orange peel, forest floor, truffle, sweet tobacco, woodsmoke. Resolved, fragile, ethereal aromatics — fully tertiary; serve carefully with patient slow air.
