Montefico is one of Barbaresco's most distinguished crus, a south-east facing amphitheater in the village of Barbaresco itself. Roagna—now in their fifth generation of winemaking—farms this site with the patience and precision that defines traditional Piedmont: long macerations, extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks, and no compromises for commercial timelines. "Vecchie Viti" (old vines) indicates fruit from their most venerable plantings, delivering concentration and complexity that justify serious cellaring. A wine for those who appreciate Nebbiolo's austere grandeur.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"The 2020 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is one of the most reticent wines in this range. Then again, we are talking about Montefico. Strong savory and mineral notes take center stage. Mint, sweet pipe tobacco and sage open first, while fruit remains in the background. Driving yet fine-grained tannins shape the mid-palate and finish. This is such a striking wine. Classic Montefico all way. Chalk, dried herbs, dried flowers and a hint of earthiness build into the delineated, saline-drenched finish. Superb." —Antonio Galloni

"Showing serious structure and intensity, the 2020 Barbaresco Montefichi VV delivers aromas and flavors of new leather, underbrush, wild strawberry, star anise and tobacco before closing on bitter orange and a savory hint of truffle. Firm tannins provide the backbone while tangy acidity keeps it bright. Drink 2030–2040." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Roagna

Luca Roagna is the fifth generation in a family that's been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1850s. His Dolcetto comes from vines over 45 years old, fermented with real patience and aged in neutral oak. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why everyone doesn't make Dolcetto this seriously.
