Pira is one of Barolo's most sought-after crus, and in Roagna's hands it becomes something transcendent. This fifth-generation estate—practicing organic/biodynamic viticulture since 2004—uses large Slavonian oak and extended maceration to produce profoundly traditional Nebbiolo. The Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto delivers wines of remarkable power and finesse: rose petal, tar, dried cherry, and an almost saline minerality. This 2020 will need patience—best from 2030 onward—but rewards with decades of evolution. Decant several hours if opening young.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2020 Barolo Pira is a powerful, tightly wound young Barolo. Dried herbs, incense, licorice, tobacco and crushed autumn leaves add layers of nuance. This starts open with a bit of coaxing, suggesting a few years in bottle or a good bit air will do the trick. The tannins are insistent, but also polished." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

96 points

"This red wine is like a laser, but also juicy in the middle of the palate, with flavours of cherries, cranberries, rose hips, menthol and minerals. It is characterised by its harmony, complexity and length, with an aftertaste that just won't quit."

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"Red berry, hay, lavender and dried botanical herb slowly appear on the beautiful 2020 Barolo Pira from Roagna along with a whiff of graphite. Showing extreme class and finesse, the palate features cranberry, tart red cherry, bitter orange, star anise and ground clove before closing on a salty mineral note. Lithe, glossy tannins provide polished support. Drink through 2032." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Roagna

Luca Roagna is the fifth generation in a family that's been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1850s. His Dolcetto comes from vines over 45 years old, fermented with real patience and aged in neutral oak. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why everyone doesn't make Dolcetto this seriously.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VarietalsNebbioloVineyardSourced from the Pira cru in Castiglione Falletto. It is a monopole vineyard and is the largest parcel owned by the Roagna family at 4.88 hectares.OrientationSoutheast.SoilThere are 6 unique micro parcels depending on the composition of the terrain which ranges from limestone marl Roca to blue stone.ViticultureThe vines for this wine are between 25 and 50 years of age.VinificationFermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 60-75 days.AgingThe wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.
