One of Piedmont's most revered traditionalists makes only about five thousand bottles of white a year, and this is it. Roagna planted Chardonnay on clay-limestone slopes in the Barbaresco zone back in the 1980s, on east-facing parcels where Nebbiolo doesn't always reach full ripeness; a share of direct-pressed Nebbiolo goes into the blend, and that is where the wine's faint red-fruit lift comes from. It ferments and rests in large neutral oak, around twenty-two months before bottling, the same unhurried cask-first approach the family brings to its Barbaresco and Barolo. The result has the texture and mineral cut people go to Burgundy for, but keeps a Piedmontese sense of joy about it. Give it air - a decant, or at least a wide glass and twenty minutes - because it opens considerably. For a wine from this address, it is a genuinely accessible way in.

More about Roagna

Luca Roagna is the fifth generation in a family that's been making wine in Barbaresco since the 1850s. His Dolcetto comes from vines over 45 years old, fermented with real patience and aged in neutral oak. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why everyone doesn't make Dolcetto this seriously.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Vitello tonnato, tajarin with butter and sage, or a simple roast chicken. Also very good with grilled branzino and salsa verde, or a plate of Castelmagno and hazelnuts.

Tasting Profile

Concentrated and textural rather than simply crisp: pear, white flowers, hazelnut and a stony, saline streak, with a whisper of red fruit from the Nebbiolo. Medium-bodied with firm acidity and a long mineral finish. Closed on opening, then unfurls with air.
