Heritage winemaking meets modern precision in this Zinfandel from vines planted in 1905—a living link to California's forgotten wine history. The R.W. Moore Vineyard sits in Coombsville's volcanic soils where cool morning breezes and east-facing exposure have been nurturing balanced, complex fruit for over a century. The 2023 vintage—one of California's finest in years—brought extended hang time and concentrated ripeness without excess alcohol (just 14.8% ABV). What emerges is a Zinfandel that defies stereotype: medium-bodied, savory, brimming with bramble fruit, candied strawberry, and cocoa powder, with black cherry, fig, and hints of volcanic ash underneath. This is not fruit-forward bombast; it's a thoughtfully structured wine where the vineyard's minerality and baking spice complexity lead the way. The Biale family's bootleg-to-benchmark journey across three generations comes through in every sip—honest, driven by terroir, uninterested in trends.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2023 Zinfandel R.W. Moore Vineyard, from a site planted in 1905 in Coombsville, is another wine in this range that oozes character. Black fruit, graphite, leather, incense, dried herbs and lavender lend sepia-toned intensity to this decidedly virile, structured offering. I would give the 2023 a year or two in the cellar, as it is pretty forbidding today." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

97 points

"From a Coombsville vineyard that dates back to 1905 (there has been some replacement of dead vines over the years), the 2023 Zinfandel R.W. Moore Vineyard gives up exotic aromas of peppered stone fruit (yellow peach and red plum). It's medium- to full-bodied, framed by plenty of silky tannins and lingers elegantly on the finish. It's a must-try wine for fans of Napa Zinfandel—or of any Zinfandel, for that matter." —Joe Czerwinski

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Brambly yet tightly focused, with deep blackberry flavors highlighted by grilled anise and savory cracked pepper as this gathers tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2034."

More about Robert Biale

Robert Biale went from Beringer to his family's Napa vineyard to founding this winery in 1991 with his dad Aldo's blessing. The estate specializes in Zinfandel from old vines dating back to 1891, making 17 different bottlings from the Black Chicken vineyard and the famous Party Line single-vineyard releases. The Biale family has been farming Napa for decades, and it shows—these are old-vine expressions that taste less like wine and more like earth memory. Serious, soulful Zin.
