Robert Michel succeeded his father Joseph in 1975 and became the old-school Cornas vigneron until his retirement after 2006. He stewarded La Geynale, a prized sub-cru high on Reynards slope, with vines planted by his grandfather in 1910—creating wines of utterly pure Cornas terroir expression. The 1999 Syrah from this legendary site is a mature library wine at 27 years old, ranking among the best vintages for Cornas. This is a wine that captures the very soul of the appellation: serious, minerally, age-worthy, and showing beautiful evolution. A collector's piece from a storied producer.

"Saturated ruby-red. Sappy, high-toned aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry and minerals. Dense, structured and juicy; powerful and full but quite perfumed in the mouth. Aromatic flavors of blueberry, blackberry and cassis. This really has fruit of steel. Finishes very long and subtle, with big, broad tannins coming late. Michel compares this wine to the 1991 version. Very strong juice." —Stephen Tanzer
