Serena Palazzolo transformed Ronco del Gnemiz in the 1990s into a quality-focused estate atop the hill of Rosazzo in Friuli's Colli Orientali. The 16.5-hectare property, now managed with her husband Christian Patat and sons, is farmed organically without chemical interventions. Friuli's signature "Ponca" soils—alternating layers of marl and sandstone from the Eocene period—create what locals call the "taste of ponca," a tactile mineral-saline sensation unlike anywhere else. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately as an individual cru. Iris undergoes whole-cluster pressing and fermentation in wood without malolactic, preserving crystalline acidity and mineral tension. The result is a notably restrained Sauvignon, departing from herbaceous regional examples: apricot, lime zest, subtle tropical notes, and that distinctive mineral-saline character. Sophisticated Friulian terroir expression rather than varietal showmanship.

Ronco del Gnemiz sits atop Rosazzo hill in Friuli's Colli Orientali, where Serena Palazzolo and her sons (with winemaker Christian Patat) farm organically on Ponca sandstone soils. White wines with bright acidity, carefully oaked reds in the Bordeaux style, all marked by mineral intensity. The vineyard is 60 years old, yields are kept low, and the wines can age for three to five years. This is northern Italian precision.
