When Tegan Passalacqua bought Kirschenmann Vineyard in 2012, he took stewardship of one of Lodi's heritage treasures: own-rooted, head-trained, dry-farmed Zinfandel planted in 1915 in the deep sandy soils of the Mokelumne River AVA. His Sandlands bottling treats those vines with the same restraint he's brought to Turley for two decades. Whole-cluster fermentations, native yeasts, neutral oak, nothing scrubbed away. The result is Lodi Zin reset to first principles, perfumed, lifted, lower in alcohol than the regional cliche, with the savory red-fruit transparency that only century-old sand-rooted vines can give. Among the most quietly revelatory Zinfandels in California, and a yearly reminder of why old vineyards matter.
