Sanford & Benedict is where California Pinot Noir grew up. Richard Sanford and botanist Michael Benedict planted these vines in 1971 in a remote, fog-cooled stretch of Santa Barbara County, and the wines that followed helped prove cool-climate Pinot could thrive here — the vineyard became the backbone of what is now the Sta. Rita Hills AVA and supplied cuttings to countless neighbors. Today Sanford Winery farms the historic, now-reunited estate organically. The 2022 is a current release: a serious, site-driven Pinot Noir from one of the West Coast's most storied vineyards. History you can actually drink.

Some of the other wines in this range are more overt, more obvious, but when it comes to balance and overall harmony, the S&B Pinot clearly has an added kick of finesse. It is one of the very best wines of this very challenging harvest."

"The 2022 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is a beautiful cross-section of the vineyard, including around one-third of the original plantings. It leads with a quintessential nose of black cherries, dark dried spices, citrus peels and sous-bois that is both poised and energetic. The palate is silky and lifted while supported with a robust power that extends through the rich, fragrant, focused finish.
