The Scalas were the first family in Ciro, and probably in all of Calabria, to convert an entire estate to organic farming and then push on to biodynamics. That kind of stubbornness runs in the family: Antonio Scala founded the winery in 1949 on land they had already held for generations, and today his son Luigi and grandson Francesco run it. This is 100% Gaglioppo from estate vineyards near the Ionian coast, planted in the late '80s and '90s on sand and clay, certified organic since 2016. Southern Italian rosato has nothing to do with pale-pink Provencal restraint; Gaglioppo gives a rose with color, grip and salt. Drink it young, drink it cold, and drink it with actual food.
