Schloss Gobelsburg's everyday Grüner Veltliner comes from some very good addresses: young vines in the estate's best sites around the Heiligenstein, namely Lamm, Grub and Renner, which are among the Kamptal's local "Grand Cru" vineyards. The vines are under 20 years old and grow on loess. They once belonged to the Steiner Allerheiligenstiftung, a religious foundation that dates back to 1171. The estate is the oldest in the Kamptal. Eva and Michael Moosbrugger have run it since 1996. They keep this wine simple: it's fermented and aged in stainless steel, and the 2025 comes in at a moderate 12.5% alcohol. The estate calls it the classic expression of Austrian wine culture, an everyday food wine that's easy to drink. You're getting top-vineyard fruit in a regional-level bottle, so buy it by the case and open it on a Tuesday.

"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner is the entry-level wine at Schloss Gobelsburg, made from estate-grown and bought-in fruit. Juicy Conference pear on the nose sets the tone for freshness and ease. Light, slender and sprightly, the palate delivers a whole load of delicious white pepper at its core. Wonderful, old-school and cool in every sense of the word." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Gobelsburg

Schloss Gobelsburg is literally the oldest winery in the Danube region, dating to 1171. Located in the Kamptal near Vienna, it's been held by Cistercian monks since 1740 and operated since 1996 by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. Karen MacNeil calls it 'one of the great wine estates of the world.' They make Rieslings that are mineral-driven, stone-fruited, and utterly classical from vineyards like Gaisberg and Heiligenstein. This is tradition with real depth.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Kamptal Grüner Veltliner profile: green apple, lemon and the grape's signature dash of white pepper, with fruit that's pleasant rather than loud. Raised in steel with no oak, it's typically light to medium-bodied with crisp, fresh acidity, moderate alcohol and a clean, dry, gently peppery finish. Think of a rounder, spicier alternative to Sauvignon Blanc for the dinner table.
