This is Zweigelt made a short walk from the hometown of the man who created the grape. Langenlois, the town right next to Gobelsburg, was the hometown of Dr. Zweigelt, who created the variety. At Schloss Gobelsburg, Cistercian monks were given their first vineyards in 1171. Its vineyards are mostly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, and Zweigelt makes up only about 7% of its plantings. The estate's reason for growing it is a Burgundian one: Zweigelt is related to Pinot Noir, so it sits naturally alongside the house's cool-climate Pinot Noir and St. Laurent. The 2022 comes from sustainably farmed estate vineyards on sand, gneiss and loess. It was fermented and aged in large casks made from Manhartsberg oak, cut in the hills just north of Langenlois, which the estate has used for its barrels for centuries. A local grape, local soils and local oak make for about as honest an introduction to Austrian red as you'll find, and it's a bottle meant for the dinner table, not the cellar.

"The 2022 Zweigelt reverberates with white pepper from the off. Slight smokiness and dark cherry shape the juicy palate. This red wine manages to pack ease, sophistication and fruit into a tightly contoured package." —Anne Krebiehl MW

More about Schloss Gobelsburg

Schloss Gobelsburg is literally the oldest winery in the Danube region, dating to 1171. Located in the Kamptal near Vienna, it's been held by Cistercian monks since 1740 and operated since 1996 by Michael and Eva Moosbrugger. Karen MacNeil calls it 'one of the great wine estates of the world.' They make Rieslings that are mineral-driven, stone-fruited, and utterly classical from vineyards like Gaisberg and Heiligenstein. This is tradition with real depth.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with a cherry sauce; grilled bratwurst with sauerkraut; roast pork with caraway and potato dumplings; mushroom goulash; a plate of cured ham and mountain cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Zweigelt profile: bright sour cherry and red berry fruit with a twist of black pepper and a little spice. Fermenting and ageing in large casks typically keeps the oak in the background, leaving a light-to-medium body, juicy acidity and soft tannins. Think of a peppery cousin of Beaujolais, finishing fresh and dry.
