Beerenauslese ("selected berries") sits near the very top of the German sweetness ladder, and Selbach-Oster's Noble R is the real thing: Mosel Riesling made from selected fruit touched by botrytis, the "noble rot." The fruit doesn't come from one vineyard. It's picked from several of the estate's Grosses Gewächs sites in Zeltingen, Graach and Bernkastel, so think of it as the best of the family's top slopes in a single bottle. Those hillsides are blue Devonian slate with weathered grey slate and small deposits of quartz. That slate is low-pH and iron-rich. In the cellar it fermented on native yeasts and was raised in stainless steel, with no oak to get between you and the fruit and acidity. Johannes Selbach runs the estate with his wife Barbara and their son Sebastian, and the family's history in wine goes back to 1600. It comes in 375ml, which is just the right amount of something this concentrated to share slowly with a few friends after dinner.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort or Stilton with toasted walnuts; seared foie gras with a fruit gastrique; apricot or peach tarte Tatin; crème brûlée; or on its own instead of dessert.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Beerenauslese profile: honey, apricot, candied peach and orange marmalade, with the saffron and dried-fruit notes that noble rot brings. The palate is rich, luscious and intensely sweet, but steel-raised Mosel Riesling typically keeps a bright, racy acidity running through it, so the long finish stays fresh rather than cloying, with a slaty mineral edge.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
