Les Baudes is a Premier Cru lieu-dit in Chambolle-Musigny, sitting against the Bonnes-Mares border and giving wines with more grip and depth than Chambolle's famously delicate norm. Domaine Serafin, based in Gevrey-Chambertin, is known for an old-school, richly concentrated style, low yields, old vines, generous new oak and unfiltered bottling. This is a 2005, one of red Burgundy's truly great vintages, prized for power and longevity, and the Serafin style was built to age. At two decades old it should be in a deep, mature window; decant well ahead and enjoy.

"Notably riper though still very fresh violet and black Pinot fruit aromas elegantly introduce earthy but refined and pure mineral infused medium plus weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel, particularly on the intense and driving finish. This is a big Chambolle with a firmness that is almost but not quite robust. In sum, this is a masculine but not inelegant Chambolle that is in essence a 'petit' Bonnes Mares that is built to age over the long-term."

"Bright red-ruby. Complex aromas of plum, currant, coffee, mocha and underbrush. Shows a medicinal character to its high-pitched black plum, licorice, menthol and dark spice flavors. Youthfully tight and solid, but there's still lovely sweetness running through the wine, not to mention excellent energy and plenty of personality. Serafin says this could be drunk now, but I'd rather lay it down." —Stephen Tanzer

"Serafin’s 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes, deeply colored and like all his wines from this vintage boasting a healthy purple glow, offers intense aromas of red and black raspberries and resin, with a slightly savage pungency that calls to mind this site’s famous neighbor Bonnes Mares. (De Vogue owns the portion of that grand cru immediately adjacent to Serafin’s vines.) In the mouth, a decidedly bloody meatiness emerges amidst the slightly jammy fruit, leading to a fine, palate-staining and firmly tannic, faintly resinous finish. Right now, this displays formidable raw intensity rather than finesse." —David Schildknecht

Mature, concentrated Chambolle: dark cherry and plum deepening into earth, spice and woodsmoke, full-bodied with fine tannins now softened. Rich and resolved.
