Spottswoode's Sauvignon Blanc has been on a four-decade run as California's most thoughtful expression of the grape — one of Karen MacNeil's so-called "Super Sauvignons." Beth Novak Milliken steers the family estate her parents bought in St. Helena in 1972. The 2022 carries on the Loire-inspired template: fermentation in a mix of French oak, stainless steel, concrete, ceramic, and clay amphora, with about 2% Sémillon and roughly 40% of the fruit drawn from Sonoma to keep the energy bright. There's a bit more textural richness here than in the 2021, but everything sits in balance. Three years in bottle, the nose is in full bloom — pink grapefruit blossom, lime zest, a flicker of salted cashew — and the palate has weight without losing tension.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc is a very pretty, aromatic wine. Tangerine oil, white flowers and light tropical notes play off a core of orchard fruit in this exotic Sauvignon Blanc. There's a bit more textural richness in the 2022, but all the elements are nicely balanced. This is a pretty dense white." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"Spottswoode's 2022 Sauvignon Blanc blends fruit from Napa and Sonoma—the proportions are 58% Napa and 42% Sonoma this year. Fermented and matured in a mix of new and used oak, stainless steel and amphorae/eggs, the wine boasts lovely citrus notes—lemon-lime and some riper expressions as well—plus touches of fig and guava. It's medium to full-bodied, a bit plump and creamy on the mid-palate, then fresh and zesty on the finish." —Joe Czerwinski

Decanter

93 points

"The iconic Napa producer fermented this Sauvignon Blanc in French oak, small stainless steel barrels, clay amphora, and ceramic and concrete cuves. Intense sweet peach aromas leap forth, followed by tarragon, sea foam and lemon zest notes. The palate is fresh with pronounced citrus flavours, followed by ripe apricot and briny minerality."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"This generous version displays intense aromatics of honeysuckle, passionfruit and litsea oil up front. Shows preserved lemon, grilled peach, dried pineapple, ginger and mango notes, with details of makrut lime leaf that linger on the long, vibrant and expressive finish."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"A flinty, herbaceous aroma leads to nicely layered flavors of citrus, ginger and limestone in this complex, subtle and fascinating wine. Nervy acidity braces the ample herb and fruit flavors for an especially energized mouthfeel."
