Suenen is a grower-producer in the Côte des Blancs, crafting precise, terroir-focused Champagne. This Blanc de Blancs comes from Oiry, a chalk-rich Grand Cru village known for tension and minerality.

Based on the 2021 harvest with reserve wines added, it was fermented partly in oak and aged on lees for complexity. A pure, structured expression of Chardonnay from a top site.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Oiry Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay. Creaminess, fresh and crusty baguette and Golden Delicious apple unite on an enticing nose with a bright green apple frisson as an overtone. Slenderness and delicacy define the body, but the flavors are full and almost generous. They evoke creamy porridge, mellow, freshly peeled yellow apple flesh, and a lovely sense of saltiness that has the ocean tanginess of an oyster shell. The longer you savor this, the saltier and more enticing it becomes: enfolding and oh-so-chalky. This Extra Brut is lovely and captivating, with a totally appetizing umami finish." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

93 points

"Suenen’s latest NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Oiry (2021 base), vinified equal parts in stainless steel and oak (about a third new, mostly from Francois Frères), is based on the 2021 vintage and includes 50% perpetual blend dating back to 2013. Disgorged in July 2024 with four grams per liter dosage, it is unfurling from the glass to reveal aromas of white flowers, lemon zest and green apple. Tensile and precise, complemented by pillowy mousse, it’s laden with bright, almost electric acids in the spirit of the year and concludes with a long, saline finish. It’s a superb introduction to the estate and rare opportunity to taste Oiry in isolation." —Kristaps Karklins

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
