Susana Balbo became Argentina's first female winemaker in 1981, and she has spent a career arguing that Malbec can be about elegance rather than brute force. This Signature bottling is her personal statement. The grapes come from high-altitude mountain sites, including limestone-rich soils in the Uco Valley, hand-picked at about 1,150 meters (3,770 feet) where the cool nights preserve freshness and lift. The result is a Malbec built on violets, dark berries, and a savory, mineral edge instead of jammy heaviness. Aged in French oak that stays in the background, it's polished but still full of energy. A benchmark from a true pioneer.

More about Susana Balbo

Susana Balbo has spent four decades showing that Argentine wine can be about finesse as much as power. She graduated in enology in Mendoza in 1981 as the country's first woman enologist, and her first job, in Cafayate in the far northern province of Salta, put her at the center of the effort that turned Torrontés into Argentina's signature white.

After years as a consulting winemaker, she founded her own winery in 1999 in Agrelo, in Luján de Cuyo, at the foot of the Andes, and she has served more than once as president of Wines of Argentina. Today it is very much a family business: her son José Lovaglio Balbo, who studied enology at UC Davis, works as a winemaker, and her daughter Ana Lovaglio Balbo works on the business side.

Balbo is a restless experimenter, with concrete eggs, amphorae, barrels of different sizes and rollers, and whites and rosés make up an unusually large share of what she makes. The range runs from Crios (Argentine slang for "offspring," a nod to her children) to the Signature line under her own name, which includes a much-admired barrel-fermented Torrontés and a Malbec from the high, cool Uco Valley. Expect freshness and lift rather than brute force.
