Te Mata makes two Chardonnays, and while Elston gets most of the attention, this Estate bottling is the easier way into one of New Zealand's most storied Chardonnay sources. It comes entirely from the family's own vineyards in three Hawke's Bay sub-regions: inland Dartmoor Valley (home of the Woodthorpe vineyards), the Bridge Pa Triangle and Havelock Hills. Havelock Hills is the one to remember. Te Mata first planted Chardonnay there in 1892, and the estate calls it New Zealand's oldest continuously producing Chardonnay vineyard. That's a lot of history for a bottle you can open on a weeknight. Te Mata was established in 1896 and remains family owned, and with Chardonnay it aims for New World ripeness balanced by freshness and structure. If you like white Burgundy but want to try somewhere new, this is a friendly place to start.
