This grower rosé Champagne comes from two kinds of rock: the Tellier brothers' vines in Moussy, Pierry and Chavot-Courcourt, on the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, grow in soils that are half chalk and half flint. The 2022 blend is 40% Chardonnay with 30% each of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. The brothers build this cuvée for elegance and subtlety rather than power, with the two Pinots bringing the red-fruit side. Les Massales is named after the selection massale vines that make up most of their holdings. These vines are grown from cuttings of the family's own best plants rather than nursery stock. The blends are also the first step in a range that climbs to single-village and single-parcel wines. That's where the value is: the whole house works the same way, with free-run juice only, native yeasts, fermentation in barrels, demi-muids and foudres, and minimal dosage, and this is the easiest way in. Quentin and Alexandre Tellier only began taking back the family vineyards in 2016, and they call themselves "vignerons paysans," or peasant winegrowers, which tells you plenty about the attitude here.

More about Tellier

Young brothers Quentin and Alexandre Tellier took over their family's vineyard in 2016, transforming it from contract grape-growers to terroir-obsessed vignerons. Thirteen parcels across Moussy, Cramant, and the Côte des Blancs, farmed organically, fermented in barrel with wild yeast. Grower Champagne done right.

Tasting Profile

Expect a delicate, elegant grower rosé: subtle strawberry and redcurrant from the two Pinots, lifted by citrus and a chalky, flinty minerality. Fermentation in wood typically adds gentle texture and a hint of spice, while the Extra Brut style keeps the fine bubbles crisp, the acidity bright and the finish clean and bone-dry.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
