The Ashen Vine — La Vigne Cendrée — a half-hectare of Chenin Blanc planted high above Château de Varennes, not far from the legendary La Roche aux Moines. Boudignon planted this site in 2015 via massal selection on a singular mosaic of grey schist, rhyolite and clayey silt, with full southern exposure. The clay component gives the wine its calling card — power and breadth on top of all the chalk and salt you'd expect from Savennières. The 2023 shows ripe orchard fruit, beeswax, white pepper and crushed rock, with a long, broad-shouldered finish. Boudignon is one of the Loire's most precise vignerons, and La Vigne Cendrée is where his ambition shows most clearly.

Perfect Pairings

The wine for richer Chenin nights: roast chicken with cream-and-mushroom sauce, scallops with brown butter, miso-glazed cod, or an aged hard cheese like Beaufort. Will easily handle a few years in the cellar before peak.
