Thierry Allemand is wine's closest thing to mythology: an electromechanic who taught himself winemaking by apprenticing for Cornas legends, who hand-rebuilt stone walls on abandoned vineyard parcels during weekends while holding another job, who launched his own négociation only when the market stopped buying his grapes. Now he's recognized as one of France's greatest winemakers, and the Cornas Chaillot is his more accessible cuvée—which is to say it's "accessible" only relative to his other masterpiece, Reynard. The 2022 comes from limestone slopes northwest of Cornas blended with granite parcels, vines aged 5-40 years creating a wine of unexpected elegance for Cornas. No new oak, no destemming, 24 months aging on lees in used barrels: this is classical, non-interventionist winemaking that lets terroir speak. You'll find red fruits, flowers, and sweet spices alongside fresh minerality and those silky tannins that make you forget Cornas has a reputation for power. This wine seduces in youth while promising to evolve over 10-15 years. It's Allemand's gift to those who want serious Cornas without the weight—though "serious" and "lighter" are all relative when a legend is pouring.

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 2022 Cornas Les Chaillots from Thierry Allemand was crafted by his son Théo using the same method as his father: 100% whole bunches, two to three days of carbon maceration and punching down instead of pumping over. Evoking a pure, delicate and gourmand bouquet of violet, mulberries and dark berries, it's medium to full-bodied, dense and firm with a crystalline, pure texture and an energetic, tense mid-palate framed by somewhat stringy tannins, typical of whole bunches. Concluding with a long, ethereal and floral finish, this is a superb wine." —Yohan Castaing

More about Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand didn't just revive Cornas—he redefined it. Learning under Joseph Michel and Noël Verset in the early 1980s, he proved that this austere appellation could produce balanced, elegant, age-worthy reds without heavy tannin and new oak as crutches. Only 500 cases each of Chaillot and Reynard, five hectares total, organic farming, minimal sulfur: Allemand is one of the closest things the Northern Rhône has to a cult figure, and he earned it.
