A 2008 Reynard is a rare chance to drink Thierry Allemand's flagship Cornas with real bottle age behind it. Production is tiny, so older vintages like this barely show up. Reynard is made entirely from the estate's older vines, 34 to 90 years old and rooted in decomposed granite, including parcels Allemand bought from the legendary Noël Verset. It isn't strictly a single-vineyard wine: his oldest Chaillot vines sometimes go into it, the mix changes from year to year, and he vinifies every parcel separately. The farming is organic and he uses very little sulfur (he even makes a small amount of Reynard with none at all). Allemand learned his craft from Robert Michel, who once saved his life when he fell into a cask of wine, and he founded his own domaine in 1982. When we visited his cellar, he opened two bottles of 2002 Reynard side by side, one bottled with no sulfur and one with a little added. With Allemand, the grower matters more than the vintage chart, and if you've wanted to see what Reynard turns into with time, this is your bottle.

More about Thierry Allemand

Thierry Allemand didn't just revive Cornas—he redefined it. Learning under Joseph Michel and Noël Verset in the early 1980s, he proved that this austere appellation could produce balanced, elegant, age-worthy reds without heavy tannin and new oak as crutches. Only 500 cases each of Chaillot and Reynard, five hectares total, organic farming, minimal sulfur: Allemand is one of the closest things the Northern Rhône has to a cult figure, and he earned it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Open it gently and give it time in the glass. Then pour it with roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, venison loin with juniper, duck breast with black olives, a mushroom and chestnut ragout, or oxtail braised in red wine.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic old-vine Cornas profile: dark blackberry and black olive, smoked meat, cracked pepper and a stony edge from the granite. Typically full-bodied, with firm, grippy tannins and fresh acidity, it's built to age and picks up earthy, savoury and floral notes over time. Think a wilder, more rugged Hermitage, finishing long and dry.
